Moore's storytelling has been praised as "Tough as barbed wire and tender as an old quilt."

Robbie's stepfather, one-legged Art Harper, is from white trash and doesn't have much of a future. Robbie's life is turned upside-down when Art moves the family to the Iowa countryside to raise hogs, an enterprise which ends in failure and defeat.

Art's pain and addiction fuel his abuse of his family as his wife plots a seemingly impossible escape for herself and her children. Christian undercurrents set against the Mississippi River in the 1960s make Bringing in the Sheep a drama of hope against odds that prove insurmountable for at least one character in the end.

...but Rick Moore does justice to that overused cliche in his tome, Bringing in the Sheep. Sandwiched between the idyllic end of America's heyday in WW II and the mass-consumption of the eighties, this stark coming-of-age story centers around a young man named Robbie and his dysfunctional family, and his mother's subsequent seduction by the one-legged bane of pain by the name of Art. With frightening imagery that will leave you breathless, Mr. Moore exposes the seamy underbelly of child abuse as graphic depictions of this vile deed are instilled within its pages.

Without giving away any more of the plot, this story is not for everyone, especially those allergic to the heavy profanity, sexuality, and adult situations chronicled within its pages.

As a plus, this story was set mainly in the Quad-Cities in the Midwest, this hinterland between Iowa and Illinois, where I grew up. Which lent the plot additional scenery to which I could most ardently relate.

Bringing in the Sheep edition by Rick Moore Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

This book held my attention until the end. The author gave very good details and his characters were believable, but it was painful to know that sometimes children are living in similar conditions. I am not a fan of the f-bomb,so that was a bit of a turn-off for me,but I realize that was the reality of the situation. I kept waiting for Mom to get some sense, but didn't see much progress in that direction. All in all it was a good read, and a good peek into another world, but I'm glad I don't live in that world.
Loved it!! The characters came to life in my head. The dialogue is awesome along with all of the smoking references. For that era and location it works great! This really needs to be a movie!! Thanks for a great read, Rick!!
This story stays true to the time period, and it is well written, but I was hoping it would see Peggy straighten out a bit more by the conclusion.
A riveting tale. It captured my attention in the first few pages. Well done Rick. I would like to see them make a movie of this one as well. Would like to see you write a sequel.Bringing in the Sheep
You wrote the book in the way that you could step into it and feel all of the anguish and pain. Very descriptive on how the characters talked, chained smoked and drank back then. Hard living, unfortunately some of the book was a very realistic view of my childhood. You wrote the story so well, unforgettable. Good job Rick, hope to see more books from you in the future.
I loved the characters in this book and everything else about it. Just read it for yourself - the lives portrayed are pathetic and strong and weak and still beautiful, after living life on the lowest side of low down. I am glad not to know these people but my life is enriched after reading about them.
This story is a powerful and very moving piece that deals with a woman and her son trying to figure out what to do for their family and how to live with the choices they have made. The time period is well depicted with the smoking and drinking and how no one really knew what the causes would be. They smoke everywhere from restaurants to hospitals and even while pregnant. The mom leaves one marriage and takes her kids into an even worse situation. The situation is very heartbreaking what they have to deal with and is very eye-opening. The characters are brought to life in a very moving and endearing way that draws you into the story and the time period. I loved the story as it was very well written. The only draw back to me was the foul language which I dont use but would have definetly been used in the situations and by the characters in the book.
